George Sheard, who held a textile degree from Bradford University, Yorkshire, immigrated to Canada from the UK in the early 1930?s to manage a woolen mill in rural Quebec, Canada for a British textile firm. In 1937, he decided to start his own business and purchased a textile mill in Way?s Mills, Quebec where he started producing wool blend overcoating fabrics for the Canadian market. At the outset of World War II, the production capacity of Geo. Sheard & Co. Ltd. was requisitioned for the war effort, and as such, the company started making fabrics for army blankets and greatcoat material for soldiers, sailors, and airmen.

In 1942, the main plant in Way?s Mills burned down and all the spinning and weaving equipment was lost in the fire. George Sheard was able to get priority permission to order new equipment from the USA, and moved the spinning and weaving departments to Coaticook, Quebec, where the company is still located today. In 1948, the dyeing and finishing departments were moved from Way?s Mills to Coaticook in order to consolidate all the operations into one location.

Douglas Sheard, the son of George Sheard, who earned a textile design degree from Leeds University in England, joined the company in 1955 and took over as president in 1964. In 1976, Geo. Sheard Fabrics changed its marketing focus and started to produce upholstery fabrics for the contract furniture market.

Two of Douglas Sheard?s children joined the company in the late 1980?s and by 1994, Iskender Sheard and Perihan Sheard took over respectively as president and vice-president of the company.

Today, Geo. Sheard Fabrics supplies contract upholstery fabrics to the leading office seating manufacturers and contract fabric distributors in Canada and the US.
